"His Dark Materials" trilogy is a written by Philip Pullman which is made up of "The Golden Compass," "The Subtle Knife and The Amber Spyglass." The protagonist, Lyra, a girl of 11 years impetuous, naive and honest liar living in a universe where everyone has a part of his soul in the form of a land animal. This animal is called daimon; to Lyra is called Pantalaimon. Lyra has a alethiometer, a very difficult to decipher, but thanks to his ability to help in many difficult situations.
In the first volume of the series Lyra must leave the college in Oxford where he lived until then to accompany Mrs. Coulter in an expedition in the Arctic. There he discovers that Mrs. Coulter is actually engaged in cruel experiments. In fact, he hired some scientists to study the effects on some children, including a friend of the same Lyra, the separation of child from daimon. But Lyra, with the help of an armored bears and witches, able to defeat the evil lady and to restore the throne to his friend. In the second book
Lyra finds herself in another universe, a place called Cittagazze. In this city beautiful but haunted by ghosts that eat the souls of men, Lyra finds an ally: Will Parry, a boy proud, sensitive, loyal and courageous a universe that could be ours, which was found by accident while trying to find a Cittagazze her late father and to whom was entrusted with the Subtle Knife, a tool that allows you to create openings between the universes and that will be useful in travel two friends. Lyra and Will embark on the long journey between the infinite parallel universes, including witches, angels and mysterious creatures.
In the third and final installment of the series, in my opinion the most beautiful, Lyra and Will must live a series of adventures in which many times risking their lives, among these there is the descent into the realm of the dead. The same Lyra is captured and his friends must face dangerous creatures in an attempt to find her. But Will not the only girl to look for: the Church, where Mrs. Coulter, her mother, now in hiding, has decreed the death of Lyra, and his father, Lord Asriel, the search because he knows that without her Will, carrier powerful knife, will not be joining him in the final battle against the Authority. Will and Lyra are conscious of having an important role to play, but do not know what it is: because the prophecy come true destiny will not have to obey a pre-established, but be free to choose.
